UE Chat Documentation
The Beta 3 of UE Chat has advanced more than ever. Good thing it's easy to learn how to use it to its full potential though; check out these docs for help, tips, and tricks. If you'd like to view a video of the new features, go to the tour page.
Getting Started
The first time you join the chat, you will see that the Lobby is opened up in a tab. This is the default room that you join, and is public to everyone. If you aren't logged in to UE Community, your nickname will be automatically generated such as guest473. You may change this by clicking on your current nickname near the message input and typing in whatever nickname you want. You can send a message by typing it into the message input box and by using the enter key or send button at the right.
Using Commands
Commands in UE Chat help you perform many useful actions. This
includes sending a status, private message, changing nickname, leaving a room, and much
more. To perform a command, you should type /command and then the value of
it. The value can be anything that is required for the particular command. If you're
changing your nickname for example, you would have to do /nick "New
Nickname". Note that the quotes are usually needed when there is more than one
word in your value.
User List
The user list displays all of the people that are online. If you are in a different room or private chat, the user list will display only those who are within that room or conversation. The Lobby will show everyone who are online.
Messages Area
The messages area displays all the messages that everyone have sent. The ones with a green icon next to them have been sent recently, and the gray ones are within the history archive.
Sending Private Messages
You can send a private message (also known as a private chat)
to someone online in 2 ways. The first way is with a command. Here is the format: /privmsg "Nickname of
Person". Make sure to type their nickname exactly as it displays in the chat,
otherwise it will not work.
The second way is by clicking their nickname in the
user list. A box should pop up displaying a "Private
message" link. Click it, and a new tab should come up with their nickname where you can
have a conservation with just that person.
Sending Previous Messages
Need to re-send a certain message? No need to copy and paste, simply use the ↑ arrow key. If you've skipped the message you were looking for by accident, use the ↓ arrow key to navigate down the list.
Sending RSS Feeds
UE Chat can easily act as an RSS reader, meaning if you want to
send the latest posts from a blog, news site, Twitter, and so on, you can. This is done
through a command. The format is /feed
URL where URL is the link to the RSS feed you want to send.
Performing Calculations
Sometimes you might find yourself doing homework and having the
chat open at the same time. Don't deny it, but on the other hand you just might need to
do some quick addition or whatever. Everyone's lazy so we decided to add a cool
command called calc. Here is the format:
/calc 1 + 1 where 1 + 1 can be any math. The spaces in between are just to
make it look cleaner. Here's a list of all the different math:
- Addition:
1 + 1 - Subtraction:
1 - 1 - Multiplication:
1 * 1 - Division:
1 / 1 - Roots:
1 ^ 1 - Complex:
(1 + 1 )^ 3 ( 4 - 4) / 3
Slapping Someone
Mad at someone? Slap them! This is done through a command. The format is /slap "Username"
where Username is the exact nickname of someone.
Flipping Coins
The classic game of "heads or tails" is being brought to UE
Chat. This uses a command, so the format is /flip heads where heads can be
either heads or tails. Using random algorithms, the chat will tell you whether it
was heads or tails, and if you won or lost.
Formal Replies
Sending a formal reply means to use someone's nickname, a comma, and then your message. This can be useful when there are many people in the chatroom and you want to make sure your isn't misunderstood. A private message can be useful, but sometimes the message should be seen by everyone. So instead of typing out their name in this format, simply click on anyone's name within the messages area.
Actions Bar
The actions bar can be seen above the text formatting buttons. You can disconnect/connect to the chat, enable/disable nickname colors, show/hide the timestamps, enable/disable sound, and show/hide the list of smileys.
Text Formatting
You can format text such as bold, italicize, underline, delete,
or change the color of your text. This is done through BB codes but you can do this
through the list of buttons available in the chat. You can highlight some text, and
click on one of the formatting buttons, or click on a formatting button and enter the
text you would like to format. To change the color, click on the C button
and choose the color you would like your messages to be.
Using Smileys
Every chat needs a set of smileys, and UE Chat is no exception. There's a standard set of smileys which you can use by clicking the smileys in the actions bar or by typing the code out. For example, to add a winking smiley, simply type ;) into your message.
Using Tinypaste
Tinypaste is a service allowing you to post long chunks of text, links, images, codes, and even videos quickly and easily. You receive a short url that lets someone view your message without having it clutter the main chatroom. To use it, click the Tinypaste link near the text formatting area and compose your message which you can decide to even password protect. After you click the submit button, you will be given a tinypaste url which you can send to someone in the chatroom. They can then click that link and view your message. Make sure to let them know the password if you password protected it in a private message.
Music Playlist App
You must be logged in to see the music playlist app. To do so,
click the login or register links at the top right.
Top songs and sometimes not so top songs are chosen
and added to the music playlist. You can request certain songs to be added or view a
full list of them by clicking the "window" icon on the right of it. You may also
refresh the music playlist whenever new songs are added. This allows you to keep
chatting instead of having to refresh the whole page.
Sharing The Chat
You must be logged in to use the sharing feature. To do so,
click the login or register links at the top right.
If you ever want to let someone know that you're
available to chat, or just want to share the love, well that's easy to do now. Simply
hover over the "Share" button on the toolbar at the top for a list of sharing services
such as Twitter and Faccebook, or click it for a full list.
